There is a new-ish restaurant on 22nd street that is driving me nuts. It’s called “Seven Dwarf’s Chinese Buffet” or something like that. The main problem with this is that they put the singular form of the word dwarf instead of the plural dwarves. So it seem like it’s a chinese buffet belonging to a single dwarf named Seven. Some weird combination of the Borg from start trek and a blatantly European fairytale. It just seems a bit weird. Why would a restaurant with a primarily asian menu use the Seven Dwarves as their name. I do not associate this fairytale with Asian culture and food in any way and it is just confusing and annoying. I am really anal.

There’s a new store opening in Saskatoon on the corner of Idylwyld and 20th street. You may have noticed it. Before it was the Red Apple Bargain-Discount-o-rama or something. They had posters drawn by five year olds in the windows advertising their sales. The store has now become some kind of glorified dollar store called Dollar Stretcher. Replacing the crappy hand drawn signs are slightly better signs in an extremely offensive color of yellow and green. This would not be such a big deal to me except for one little faux pas. One of the signs says that you can pay with Visa or “Interact”.

This word is a big pet peeve of mine. The word is Interac. No “t”. Google defines the word “interact” as “to act with each other” while “Interac” is defined as “a Canadian organization linking enterprises that have proprietary networks so that they may communicate with each other for the purpose of exchanging electronic financial transactions. The Association was founded in 1984 by five financial institutions. As of May, 2003 there are over 110 member organizations and membership continues to expand. In Canada, the word Interac is often used as an eponym for debit card.” Major difference.

I can’t believe this company has been so irresponsible as to spell it incorrectly on their advertising! I have to pass it several times a week and the frustration is building up. At some point I’ll probably be forced to drive my car straight through the window just to get the offending sign taken down. Yes it’s a little extreme. But spelling is important to me. And it should be to this store, too, if they want to project an image other than trashy, lower-class and completely uneducated.

I guess when it all comes down to it, despite my lengthy speeches on vast areas of gray, I really don’t think spelling falls into that category. Oh well.
