I was looking through the local phone book for the number of a hairstylist as I wanted to get a haircut while I am living in the lap of luxury staying at my parents’ house. Â I flipped to what could ostensibly called be called the “yellow pages” although they are actually pink and it’s more like page, not pages (Ok, maybe about half a dozen pages). Â But I could find no entry under “hairstylist” Â or “hairdresser” or “hair” or “salon” or even “beauty”, despite the fact that I know there are at least 3 hair salons in the small city close to where my parents live, and probably more. Â
Since I am stubborn as a mule persistent, I started scanning through the yellow pink pages, line by line, searching for a synonym for hair stylist that I had forgotten. Unfortunately, I found none. Â But I did find that we can all rest easy in the knowledge that Southern Manitoba has it’s priorities in order. Â There is an entire category (with one entry) for cheese:

Isn’t that awesome? It totally made my day.
Oh, and I did eventually find the name of the hairdresser I was looking for in the regular listings. It only took me ten minutes to read the whole phone book.Â

ah small town phone books… i know you so well. here are some more frustrating things about trying to find addresses and such in a small town.
1. no one knows their street address. they’ll say “i live besides the schmitz’s old place” or “i live where old man peters used to live”
2. they don’t even know street names. they have yocal names for streets like “millionaire’s avenue” or “cat’s alley” but “go down third street”? forget it!
3. sometimes farm people have their mailing address in town but they’re phone number is actually in the district of another town so you can never find it or you’ll have to guess what town they’re nearest but that’s not always a sure thing either – very frustrating!
Good thing you won’t have to deal with this type of stuff in Boston which I understand is a well planed and altogether lovely city… Out of all the cities to live in in the states its probably one of the nicest. Why does it have to be so damn far away?!?!
I can’t believe you guys are off into the wide world… to a place where you don’t know anyone. I hope you’ll find the wonderful friends and community you most definitely deserve! We miss you out here on the lonely prairies!
