dear child protective services…

Let me save you the phone call. Yes, this is my daughter’s favorite song. But I really am trying to encourage her to enjoy other, more age appropriate songs. And she does like the typical “Twinkle Twinkle” and “ABC”. It’s just that when she’s walking down the street or absentmindedly playing at home, what comes out of her mouth is “Malcolm solves his problems with a chainsaw…” So I am begging you not to overreact when she starts belting it out tomorrow, at her first day of school. We don’t even own a chainsaw.

A few nights ago we had the privilege of sharing a Sabbath meal with some Jewish friends. One of our friends was explaining the different blessings to Avery. The final blessing is said over a sweet white bread and then salt is sprinkled on it to remind us that life isn’t always sweet and that some people don’t have as “sweet” a life as we do. Colin was trying to explain it to Avery but I think she’s a bit young to comprehend the symbolism. A few minutes later Avery was talking about the immunization that she had received that day and how it hurt (because it was a HUGE drama, let me tell you) and Colin says “See, that’s like the salt, Avery…” (meaning to continue to explain how the shot was a small “salty” part in her “sweet” day). Avery looks at him quizzically and says “But daddy the salt didn’t hurt!” Yeah, the metaphor was lost on her.

Oh, and have I mentioned that my ONE year old son has learned to open the fridge? One small step for child. One giant step for child’s disaster-creating capability. I am NOT happy.
